Golden King BBQ Express

IMG_6686-2Golden King BBQ Express is a place like this:

You order, you eat, you leave. Done.

Any given lunch service will see all tables turn over at least thrice with a queue of takeaway-ers clogging the procession of those filing in. I’ve been shoved onto a table with a complete stranger before. Now sharing a table with a stranger may be one thing, but the food is the reason we all endure such comical economics.

For 5 years I have viewed this haphazard approach to service. Why? Because the food is excellent. Their egg noodles are cooked to perfection, roast duck – tender and char siu draws a queue out the door. They don’t care much about presentation here either. The decor is tacky and all you can really hear is the bone crunching sound of a meat cleaver sectioning off duck, and roast pork. Who cares if the service is rushed, inattentive and lost in translation. When I get my plate of combination wet fried ho-fun and with egg sauce, all is forgiven.

I challenge any reader to find me a better ho-fun anywhere in Perth. And for the price.

You’ll have to put your blinkers if you’re sensitive about dining in places that err into third world territory.

What the hell! I was there today!

And I was thinking something very similar actually…especially when I saw a woman with a Chanel handbag at the counter…who happened to be wearing tracksuit pants.

Ok…so maybe my first thought was more *puts on a black woman’s voice* “Honey, you ain’t foolin’ no one wit dat hand-baig!” but then I thought…no woman in their right mind…who could afford a legit Chanel handbag…would be having lunch in a place like this.

As far as possible competition goes…what about Hong Kong BBQ in Northbridge?

And from a reader’s perspective who’s actually been to this place, the statement “places that err into third world territory” simply means that hygiene may be questionable…but then…that’s what makes it authentically Asian.

Oh…and don’t park out the front either. Park some distance away and walk in. The car park is pretty tight…and it’s usually full of Asian drivers.

I think I’ve had a very good ho fun at Swanlake Chinese restaurant in Churchlands (next to the herdsman lake shopping centre) 3 Flynn Street. The ho fun is EXCELLENT and so is the fried rice and noodles. Almond Chicken is excellent and also crayfish noodles in singapore style sauce. Great price too.

Tsk tsk. People like Devil’s Advocate are typical of the narrow-minded, small town mentality types around Perth/WA. If you’ve never seen or bought a real Chanel handbag, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The thing is, the people who have the money to buy a real Chanel handbag are not at all concerned about where they dine or where they go to be seen etc – this is only some obsession of “wanna-be”s who lack self esteem (and real money). I wonder why it has never occurred to the types of people like the Devil’s Advocate that there are people in this world with real Chanel handbags who actually LIKE going to places that serve GOOD FOOD regardless of the price. I’m one of them! As for Golden King – the one in Northbridge is always great, always consistent, and always delicious – and cheap! I can go to expensive restaurants but I still love my Hongkong roast ducks and siew yook so why shouldn’t I go to places like these!

Golden King Rules! It’s that simple. If you know food then you know this place works.

Not tried the Hor Fun at Golden King yet, but I will soon, thanks for sharing. Great photos :) I love the Hor Fun dishes at Penang Food (175 William Street, Northbridge – next door to Kakulas). They have the classic Malaysian-style scorched Koay Teow or Kwai Tew which to me is what takes this dish to a totally different level altogether. They have a combination Hor Fun (chicken, prawn, sliced fish cake), Seafood Hor Fun, or Beef Hor Fun. I recommend the first two. The other style is the Yin Yong Hor Fun which in either Combination or Seafood is cooked using both Kwai Tew as well as Mai Fun (mee hoon/rice vermicelli). Both are scorched and sometimes the Mai Fun arrives at the table still gorgeously crispy. This same sauce also comes with their Crispy Yee Meen dish which are crispy deep fried (egg?) noodles in the same delicious egg gravy. They are very generous with their vegetables too (choy sum). The restaurant has had a recent facelift in red and black. The food is consistent, and very authentic – my favourite (and probably the best) Malaysian restaurant in Perth. Do try it and blog about it – would love to know what you think…
